Cable cleats are used to support and retain electric cables to containment in the event of a short-circuit.

Cable cleats can be used to clamp and retain cables in various configurations, industries and applications  – this includes single, trefoil, quad and multiple cable bundles for all cable diameters and applications. Specialist cable cleats are available for fire resistant, zero halogen, chemical resistant and extra high voltage cables.

Similarly, cable cleats can be developed to mount to non-standard structures or surface treated to resist aggressive corrosion for offshore oil and gas or petrochemical projects.

Ellis Patents consistently short circuit test cable cleats at independent test laboratories. The following video provides compelling evidence for the corrrect specification of appropriate fault rated cleats. Three short circuit tests were performed on 3 x single core 777kcmil 2kV marine cables at 59kARMS in trefoil formation using 1/2″ wide stainless steel cable ties and Ellis Patents Emperor cable cleats. The short circuit engendered mechanical force exceeding 4,500 lbs/ft. Click play :

Cables restrained by stainless steel cable ties were catastrophically damaged suffering extensive damage to the cable jacket sheath and insulation. Cable ties actually failed prior to the first quarter cycle current waveform peak violently projecting the cable tie buckle ball bearings with sufficient velocity to embed into the test bay bells.

The shrapnelling of cable ties and consequent cable thrashing inflicted serious damage to the cable tray.

In contrast, correct clamped cables using Ellis Patents Emperor cable cleats were subjected to two successive short circuits and after careful inspection no damage was visible.

In conclusion, the cables passed the required IEC voltage withstand test and could continue in service at full load. Unrestrained cable movement causes cable damage, damage to surrounding equipment and possible personal injury (due to the inevitable proximity of operations and maintenance personnel), resulting in lost production and potential litigation.
